Cargill Donation Supports 4H in Sedgwick County

Cargill Donation Supports 4H in Sedgwick County
Four 4H programs focusing on the environment, leadership and citizenship funded by Cargill donation.

Several Sedgwick County 4H student achievement programs will be funded in spite of cutbacks in state and county budgets, thanks to a $14,050 donation from Cargill.

Wichita is home to the headquarters of Cargill Meat Solutions and its Culinary Center of Excellence. Cargill also has grain handling, soybean crushing and flour milling operations in Wichita. The company has a longstanding commitment to the support of education in communities where it does business.'

With Cargill's donation, Sedgwick County will support four 4H programs that focus on the environment, leadership and citizenship. For example, County Camp at Rock Springs has an environmental curriculum, which includes educational classes on ground water, wind and solar solutions.

Another example includes the Discovery Days 4H achievement program, which will use Cargill's funding to provide students with the tools needed to learn leadership tactics.  These lessons include hands-on, mini college classes, which teach soil science, ecology of the prairie, horticulture, food science, grain science and an introduction to university research projects.

Next, the National 4H program allows students to view their citizenship as a means to understanding the larger world environment. Learning experiences focus on science, engineering and technology.

Lastly, the Classroom Outreach 4H program allows students to focus on citizenship and the local environment based on human actions. Students will also develop knowledge of math and the food industry through Classroom Outreach's Bread in a Bag and Fraction Power classes.

"Cargill's donation allows Sedgwick County to provide and support educational programs for student's in our community," said Jodi Besthorn, county extension agent for 4H youth development. "The environmental awareness, leadership development and citizenship training provided for our kids would not be possible without Cargill's contribution."

"As part of a company that values the environment and education, Cargill is proud to increase environmental awareness in our youth community," said Derek Roth, maintenance and reliability leader at Cargill's soybean crush facility in Wichita. "The science, engineering and technology education provided by 4H will help develop our student's leadership skills in finding solutions to better maintain our natural resources."
