Canada Finds Another BSE Cow

A beef cow in Alberta has been confirmed to have BSE.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says a 13-year-old beef cow in Alberta has been diagnosed with bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The carcass is under CFIA control, and an investigation to find the animal's herdmates from birth forward is underway, being directed by international guidelines.

The animal was born before the 1997 Canadian ban on use of animal products in feed. CFIA says it expects to find a small number of cases over the next several years as the disease is eliminated from the nation's cattle herd.

The World Health Organization granted Canada status as a BSE Controlled Risk country. According to CFIA, that status will not be affected by this case. As soon as CFIA's investigation is complete it will be made public.
