Prices bison ranchers are receiving for slaughter stock continues to hover near the highest point since the USDA began compiling monthly data in 2004.
Young bulls in March brought an average of $246.53/cwt, which is $0.46/cwt. lower than the previous month, but $9.23/cwt. higher than March 2009. Young heifers brought $238.70/cwt. last month, which is a jump of $10.12/cwt. from the previous month, and $18.62/cwt. from the previous year.
The slaughter prices reflect continuing strong consumer demand for bison meat, along with tightening supplies of market-ready animals.
