NFU panelist touts Renewable Electricity Standard.

National Farmers Union Government Relations Representative Jeremy Peters told attendees at the Biomass South 2010 conference in Memphis, Tenn. that Congress still has time to pass meaningful energy legislation before the end of the year.

"NFU continues to encourage a Renewable Electricity Standard as well as an extension of tax credits for the biofuels industry," Peters said. "Both legislative priorities can have meaningful and positive results for farmers, ranchers and rural America."

Peters spoke on a panel focused on policy relating to the biomass industry. Items of discussion included definitions of biomass, biomass crop assistance program, climate legislation, and regulatory issues. Peters pointed out that significant renewable energy regulations at the Environmental Protection Agency and the USDA are at various stages and address higher ethanol blends, biogenic carbon emissions, and incentives for biomass crop production.

Biomass South is the premier event establishing the South's leadership position in the critical transformation of the global economy from a fossil fuel economy to a bio-based renewable resource economy.
