Beef Cow Leasing to Be Part of 'Fall Focus on Beef' Program

Sessions take place Dec. 11, 12 in Mankato, Stockton, St. Francis and Sharon Springs.

drought-influenced ownership changes and the rising average age of beef producers are some of the factors that analysts are linking now to an increased interest in beef cow leasing arrangements, according to Sandy Johnson, northwest area livestock specialist for Kansas State University Research and Extension.

To help producers determine a fair arrangement for such leases, the topic will be part of the Fall Focus on Beef programs that K-State Research and Extension will host Dec. 11 and 12 at Mankato, Stockton, St. Francis and Sharon Springs.

Rodney Jones, K-State production livestock economist, will be at all locations to address approaches to leasing beef cows. Bryan Rickard with the Kansas Department of Animal Health will provide an update on the sale barn radio frequency identification (RFID) project and the National Animal Identification System.

At the Stockton location, Johnson will round out the program, discussing the economics of reproduction.

At the other locations, Jones will also present an outlook on cattle economics. Plus, Twig Marston, K-State Research and Extension beef specialist, will discuss the effective use of by-products.

The series organizers are requesting that interested Kansans pre-register by Dec. 8 to reserve a set of program materials and a meal. The specific meeting times, locations and contact telephone numbers are:
