Aug. 23 Sustainable Ag Tour to Highlight Value-Added Processing

Stops to include canned foods, wine and other agritourism.

Sampling value-added food products is part of the schedule for an Aug. 23 bus tour of northeast Kansas farms practicing sustainable agriculture. The day-long tour will depart from the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Lawrence, and make five stops.

The farms´ value-added ventures feature canned foods, knitting kits, salsa, wines, fruit logs, yarns, pies, packaged and dried meats, brokerage services, and various agritourism activities. Some of their "raw" products are alpacas, pastured poultry, vegetables, fruits, bedding plants and mushrooms.

Tour participants also will see an on-farm certified kitchen, retail store, and poultry processing facility. Discussion of the marketing strategies the hosts employ will cover such approaches as community- supported agriculture, Internet sales, producer alliances, U- pick operations, farmers markets, and off-farm wholesale and direct markets.

The tour´s limited seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-registration is required and due by Aug. 16. The $10 per person fee will cover a box lunch and refreshments.

Tour sponsors include Kansas State University Research and Extension and the KSU-based Kansas Center for Sustainable Agriculture and Alternative Crops. They also include the Helping Farm Families Succeed in Business Project and the Kansas Rural Center.

Part of the tour's support is a partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture´s Risk Management Agency.
