Auction Raises $76,000 For New SDSU Cow/Calf Unit.

More than $76,000 was raised for the construction of a new Cow/Calf Unit at South Dakota State University during the Dakotafest fundraising auction.

Dakotafest vendors contributed thousands of dollars worth of sale items for the auction.

Organized by a volunteer committee of SDSU faculty and friends, the auction drew quite a crowd of 150 people.

"Dakotafest venders absolutely stepped forward and showed their support for this project with donations of products and credits," says Cody Wright, SDSU animal science professor who helped organize the event.

"We also had several other generous donations from livestock producers and companies coming in, literally right up to the beginning of the auction. It's refreshing to see how many people are on board with this project and how strongly they support what we're trying to do."

All auction proceeds will go to construction of the new SDSU Cow/Calf Unit. Currently the SDSU Cow/Calf Unit is located on campus in Brookings and is in need of updates to meet the industry's needs for research, development and student training.

Land for the new facility has been purchased 10 miles from campus. SDSU Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering students worked with SDSU faculty to draw up the tentative plans for new facility. The state-of-the-art facility will be built on 640-acres and will include; indoor calving and working facilities, a wet lab, meeting space and a 16-pen feeding barn.

One of only a few facilities like it in the nation, Wright says the facility will be used by researchers, students and producers for research and educational purposes to strengthen the South Dakota cattle industry.

"This cow/calf unit is the future of South Dakota's cattle industry," says Dave Barz, a large animal veterinarian and partner in Northwest Vet Supply, Parkston, S.D. "This is a dynamic industry. Changes happen rapidly, and it takes units like this to research what works in South Dakota."

In a time when budget cuts impact every industry, Barz says the auction is a good example of how agribusiness, farmers and ranchers work together for the good of the entire cattle industry.

"This is the rural way. We take care of ourselves and make things happen," Barz says.
