Artificial Insemination School Offered

Special course offered by Washington State in artificial insemination.

Washington State University animal science professionals are offering a special short course in artificial insemination at the Pullman campus on Aug. 11-13.

The course, taught by David deAvila will bring the expertise of the WSU research technician who has extensive experience in AI.

The course will be limited to 20 persons, and the deadline to enroll is this Friday, July 15.

Tuition is $400 per person, regardless of time of arrival, which covers animal costs and supplies.  The minimum age for participation is 15-years-old, and all students under the age of 18-years-old must have a parent or designated guardian accompany them during the entire course.

"Some people will want to learn this from the beginning, while others just need a refresher," says WSU Animal Scientist Kris Johnson. "Artificial insemination providers used to offer this info, but some don't have the facilities any more. We wanted to meet the needs of smaller producers in the industry."

Participants may arrive at their convenience to join the class from Aug. 11 at 2 p.m. through noon on the 12th of August. Course organizers strongly recommend that people with no AI experience come on Aug. 11 for extra time and instruction.

Those looking for refresher instructions are advised to arrive no later than noon on the 12th. Classroom instruction in reproductive physiology, semen handling, estrus synchronization and heat checking will be provided.

To enroll, go to, and click on the AI School link to fill out registration forms.

No refunds will be given, but registration is transferable. The course organizers will maintain a waiting list in order to accommodate as many people as possible.
