The new International Animal Health and Food Safety Institute on the Olathe Innovation Campus of Kansas State University is open for business.
The new institute formally opened last week with an official ribbon cutting and a speech by Gov. Sam Brownback.
"This is a great day for Kansas and K-State," Brownback said. "The opening of this institute will strengthen the efforts to make our state a worldwide leader in animal health and food safety, which in turn will greatly expand our research and economic activity, and create jobs."
The institute is a $28-million, 108,000-square-foot facility. The K-State Olathe campus will serve as a center for research, education and commercialization. Students earning master's and doctorate degrees in biosciences and biotechnology will work alongside scientists conducting research on the campus.
In addition, K-State Olathe also will partner with the Kansas City area companies in providing professional development training for employees. K-State Olathe is part of the Johnson County Education and Research Triangle initiative, a cooperative effort with the University of Kansas that involves KU's Edwards Campus and the KU Medical Center.
The new center is losing no time launching programs, with a Teaching Food Safety Through Food Science Summer Teacher Workshop coming up on the campus June 13-16.
Teaching Food Safety Through Food Science is an interactive hands-on in-service program designed to prepare 20 Kansas teachers to educate middle and high school students about food safety through existing food science units and/or courses in the family and consumer sciences, agriculture, or science curriculum. The intended outcome is high school students knowledgeable about food safety, food science, and career opportunities related to public health.
The workshop is sponsored by One Health Kansas, an organization that promotes awareness and understanding of the interconnections among human, animal and environmental health. One Health Kansas was developed by Kansas State University in 2008 and is funded by the Kansas Health Foundation.
As part of the workshop, teachers will participate in classroom, laboratory and industry instruction focusing on the concept of food science, food microbiology fundamentals, microbes and food spoilage, prevention of food borne illnesses, and food science related careers. Guided by national standards related to science and family and consumer sciences, the program will also emphasize thinking skills, decision-making, cooperative learning, problem-based learning, and technical writing skills.
Kansas teachers are encouraged to apply for this in-service program that includes a $1,000 stipend for course expenses related to travel, graduate tuition and fees, and lodging.
