'America Needs Farmers' Activities At State Fair

'America Needs Farmers' Activities At State Fair

You have a chance to win an "Ultimate ANF Fan Experience Package" at 2011 Iowa State Fair. Other prizes offered by Iowa Farm Bureau include $1,000 in groceries, a new riding lawn mower, and more.

The Iowa Farm Bureau Federation is celebrating its partnership with the Iowa Hawkeyes by offering a number of 'America Needs Farmers' activities at Farm Bureau Park during the 2011 Iowa State Fair Aug. 11-21 in Des Moines. In addition to the "Ultimate ANF Fan Experience Package," visitors can register to win $1,000 in groceries, a new riding lawn mower and more.

The Iowa Farm Bureau and the University of Iowa have recently teamed up to promote the long-standing tradition of the Hawkeye football team members displaying the logo ANF (America Needs Farmers) on their helmets. First established in 1985 by historic coach Hayden Fry to help draw awareness to the plight of Midwestern farmers during the Farm Crisis years, the logo returned to the Hawkeye helmets in 2009 by current coach Kirk Ferentz.

"I have always believed in embracing all the good things that Coach Fry built into the program and ANF was one of his greatest," said Ferentz. "There is so much to be proud of in Iowa and our prominent position in agriculture is one of them."

Iowa Farm Bureau honoring state's farmers with Tailgate Toss game

The IFBF will be celebrating ANF and the state's farmers by hosting a Tailgate Toss game at Farm Bureau Park each day of the fair. Iowa farmers will be on-hand to visit with fairgoers about agriculture and offer them an opportunity to play the bean-bag toss and earn prizes. Each day, the first 100 visitors to the park will receive free 'America Needs Farmers' t-shirts. In addition, they can register to win an Ultimate Fan Experience Package at Kinnick Stadium this fall.

That package includes four reserved seat tickets to the Oct. 15 ANF Game Day, which will feature the Iowa Hawkeyes versus the Northwestern Wildcats; four on-field passes for one quarter; autographed footballs by Coach Kirk Ferentz and Hayden Fry and ANF fan gear.

Chance to win other prizes, and to get free health screenings at fair

Farm Bureau members can enter to win $1,000 in free groceries and use their member coupon to redeem a free gift. They may also register to win a free John Deere riding lawn tractor. Park visitors can learn more about Farm Bureau benefit partners and special member discounts. Visitors who join Farm Bureau at the fair may register to win a Case IH Scout utility vehicle.

Young visitors will also enjoy Farm Bureau Park as the Iowa Farm Bureau Young Farmer Advisory Committee members offer a variety of free kids' activities and prizes from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13.

The IFBF promotes the importance of healthy lifestyles and will feature a number of free blood pressure, glaucoma, cancer, BMI, and aneurysm screenings on select fair days.
