Allied Cooperative and Land O'Lakes joined together to donate a total of $20,000 to area food pantries. Allied Cooperative made their donation in conjunction with a corporate match program through the Land O'Lakes Foundation called "Feeding Our Communities". This program is focused on helping alleviate hunger locally, nationally (in rural America) and globally. Pantries in Adams-Friendship, Arcadia, Blair, Galesville, Mauston, Necedah, Plainfield, Plover, Tomah and West Salem were recipients of the funds with $2,000 going to each pantry.
"Unemployment and financial uncertainty have impacted many families in our area," said Timothy Diemert, Allied Cooperative CEO. "Services like the food pantry have become a necessary means for many families, especially during the winter months when household expenses are at their peak. We have great appreciation and respect for the service our local pantries are providing our communities, and we wanted to show our support of their efforts."
In rural America, 11.7% of an estimated 2.2 million households are considered food insecure. Nationally 11.1%, or 13 million households (urban and rural), are food insecure. This means these households, at some time during the year, had difficulty providing enough food for all their members. Area food pantries typically see an added surge in the number of people who need help during the holiday season. Donations such as this will be a big help in their efforts to ward off hunger.
