Stoneville, NexGen offer new cotton products

Stoneville and NexGen cotton will enhance their product lineup with five new products for 2007 that offer high-yield potential and excellent fiber quality to meet the needs of cotton growers.

Kyle Maple, U.S. cotton marketing manager for Monsanto, noted that Stoneville's new products build on the successful performance of ST 4554B2RF, the most widely used Bollgard II/Roundup Ready Flex product grown in the United States for 2006.

Introduced this season, ST 4554B2RF displayed strong emergence and early season vigor that translated into strong yield performance for southern cotton producers.

“The same breeding organization that developed ST 4554B2RF is now offering four new great-performing Stoneville products for cotton producers to consider for their 2007 planting decisions,” Maple said. “These products deliver strong emergence for rapid stand establishment that can result in higher yield potential.”

New Stoneville products include:

  • ST 4427B2RF, combining great yield potential, broad adaptation and the Bollgard II with Roundup Ready Flex technologies. An early/mid-maturing product, it also features outstanding fiber quality.

  • ST 5327B2RF, a new medium-maturing product with both the Bollgard II and Roundup Ready Flex technologies. It is broadly adapted, has demonstrated high yield potential and has a very good fiber package.

  • ST 5283RF is a new medium-maturing Roundup Ready Flex product that has demonstrated the ability for high yield potential across a broad area. This semi-smooth leaf variety also has a very good fiber package.

  • ST 6565B2RF, a new full-season Bollgard II with Roundup Ready Flex picker product that has premium fiber quality, offers exceptional yield potential and is a smooth leaf type. An excellent choice for growers in the lower Mid-South and Southeast who prefer a full season product.

“The exciting aspect of these four new products from Stoneville is that the yield can be equal or superior to the major competitive products,” said Lloyd McCall, U.S. cotton technical manager for Monsanto.

“They also provide improved fiber characteristics driving increased profitability for cotton producers.”

Maple noted that all four of the new Stoneville products incorporate the Roundup Ready Flex trait, which allows growers to spray Roundup agricultural herbicides over-the-top from cotton emergence up to one week prior to harvest.

“Producers who used the Roundup Ready Flex cotton system this season were impressed with its flexible weed control, excellent crop safety and yield performance,” Maple said.

“We are pleased to offer this technology in an expanded number of Stoneville products for 2007.”

Three of the new Stoneville products also are stacked with the Bollgard II trait, which offers unsurpassed control of budworms, bollworms, armyworms, loopers and other key cotton pests.

Maple said NexGen is a category of cotton that's all its own, bred specifically to deliver high-quality fiber in the challenging conditions of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. NexGen products offer producers picker quality fiber, yet possess a high level of storm tolerance.

A new NexGen product for 2007 is:

  • NG 1572RF, a new, very early-maturing Roundup Ready Flex product. It has great yield potential, excellent storm tolerance and very good fiber quality.
