As another planting season quickly approaches, it’s time to start thinking about what preemergence herbicide is going to help you control those pesky weeds that are just waiting to limit soybean yields.

It’s no secret that waterhemp is one of the most aggressive, resistant weeds Midwest farmers deal with. Unfortunately, this weed is no stranger to Dillan Smith, co-owner of Smith Brothers Agronomy in Newell, Iowa. Smith says waterhemp in his area is resistant to several herbicide modes of action, which makes it quite difficult to manage.

“Waterhemp is getting harder and harder to control. The single-mode-of-action products and generics don’t hold up long enough and then the postemergence products just aren’t 100% effective anymore, and now those are the dirtiest fields in my area,” Smith explains.

Enter Kyber herbicide

A very recent addition to the soybean herbicide market, Kyber stacks up against waterhemp and other problem weeds.

Smith had several customers try Kyber for the first time last spring, and he says the herbicide kept some of the most difficult, herbicide-resistant weeds out of customers’ fields. Kyber also held up under some less-than-ideal conditions. In fact, Smith says, “It’s probably the best preemergence herbicide in the soybean market right now."

Smith says Kyber offers several benefits to growers, but three stand out the most from last season:

  1. Convenience — Kyber combines three modes of action, each effective individually, in one premix to control resistant weeds.

  2. Multiple modes of action — Smith also shares Kyber held up well despite very dry weather throughout the season: “We didn’t have a lot of moisture last spring, and the combination of the three modes of action in Kyber fared better than the competition.”

  3. Extended residual activity Smith and his customers were very impressed with the extended residual activity Kyber offered. The long-lasting residual creates a wider window for postemergence applications, making it a valuable tool in the fight against PPO- and ALS-resistant weeds. “They were happy — six weeks after application, their fields were really clean. It was a surprise. In a dry year like we had, the preemergence herbicides don’t last as long. This year, [Kyber] held really well,” Smith explains.
