With harvest halfway home this week, growers reported some of their best yields so far, adding more confirmation to the records projected Oct. 12 by USDA.

To be sure, conditions vary widely. Corn yields posted to “Feedback From The Field” ranged from 115 to twice that much, a 230 bpa put up in Iowa.

“I had no rain in June but lots of heat,“ said the Nebraska producer at the low end of that spectrum.  “Plus, wind damaged my corn stand 9%-39%.”

Even some of the 200+ yields registered this year were disappointing for some producers. A grower in western Kansas, where irrigated corn is the rule, came in with 218 bpa, but that’s 30 below normal.

Corn yields appear stressed the most in the eastern Midwest, where late planting was followed by a lack of rain. That caused tip-back in corn. Impacts in soybeans have been mixed.

“We were in an area with good rain this summer, and the beans are 10 bushels less than we thought,” wrote a producer northwest of Columbus, Ohio, with 45 bpa soybeans. “A lot of pods have one or two beans in them.”

Numerous farmers this year said crops aren’t as good as they look from the road. But one from southern Michigan said the opposite was true. “Soybeans better than look like,” said the grower, who estimated yields at 55 bpa.

Both corn and soybean yields reported last week improved from the previous week, with averages better that reported by USDA. The overall averages posted to Feedback From The Field this season, are still lower than the government’s October estimate.
