SOIL HEALTH ’N’ MORE: Farmers need to identify and use the best combination of practices that improve water quality and soil health field by field.

A special webinar on “Using a Systems Approach To Soil And Water Conservation” is being offered by Iowa Learning Farms at 7 p.m. Nov. 18.

The webinar will highlight research, grounded in systems thinking, aimed at better understanding the dynamics underpinning contemporary soil and water conservation challenges. “This approach uses knowledge across disciplinary boundaries and methods from social, natural and computer modeling sciences,” says Benjamin Turner, a Texas A&M University specialist on agroecosystems. He will be the guest presenter.

Key points of discussion will include how agricultural producers’ land ethics and the incentives of contemporary ag policy shift land transformation toward greater cultivation, the effects of which alter soil ecosystem functions, including delayed soil legacy effects that may change the dynamics of runoff and stream sediment loading.

Trade-offs between alternative agricultural policies, the role of the growing soil health movement, and how a systems approach can be used to better understand and prioritize emerging soil and water resource management problems will also be discussed.

For anyone who wishes to attend in person, the Monday evening discussion will begin at 7 p.m. in 2432 Food Sciences Building at Iowa State University in Ames.
