Small-grain combine

JOHN DEERE'S small-grain combine features a 660-mm high-inertia cylinder to provide a high level of initial separation, a design Deere has been using for more than 50 years to thresh grain with minimal damage. Six, 11-step straw walkers provide further separation. A power separator combs the crop mat as it's pulled over the walkers, allowing trapped grain to fall through to the cleaning shoe.

The combine is powered by an 8.1-liter, 305-hp John Deere PowerTech engine with a 7% power bulge to help get through weedy patches or tough spots. More power also kicks in with the combine's power boost when unloading on the go.

At the rear of the combine, a 3,500-rpm chopper, with 108 rotating blades and 68 stationary blades, allows for small residue sizing while a spreader deflector provides a uniform layer of chaff. The system can also be set to drop straw for baling.

A feature called TouchSet automatic combine adjust is standard equipment. This gives the operator in-cab, one-button control over cylinder and fan speed, concave clearance, and pre-cleaner, chaffer, and sieve openings. AutoTrac assisted steering is also available for these GreenStar-ready machines. The satellite guidance system allows for hands-free steering.

Automatic feed-rate control is an option that allows the combine to speed up or slow down according to the volume of crop to maximize harvesting capacity of the separator.

List price of the 9660 WTS combine is $214,275.

Another new item is John Deere's 615P belt pickup platform for the company's previously introduced STS combines. This new 15-ft. platform design includes a 26-in.-dia. auger with aggressive 5-in.-deep flighting for high performance in windrows.

Four 44.5-in. spliced belts are driven by dual 97cc hydraulic motors and a heavy rubber-coated traction roll. An air bag suspension system keeps the platform stable and close to the ground. Used with Deere's Header Height Sensing and Contour Master systems, the platform allows the operator to run at faster speeds in variable field conditions without crop loss or header damage. List price is $19,478.
