SK Foods donates one million cans of tomatoes to California food banks

With resources declining at food banks throughout the state, SK Foods has donated more than 82,000 cases of 15 oz. canned diced tomatoes in multiple regions throughout California. The 82,000 donated cases amount to nearly a million cans of tomatoes, a retail value of well over $1 million.

"The world food shortages are right here in our backyard," said SK Foods Chief Executive Officer Scott Salyer. "SK Foods has long taken the community's needs to heart. And we plan to look further into our inventory for other opportunities. "

As food supplies dwindle and prices increase worldwide, food banks throughout the state have found themselves in short supply of much-needed healthy and nutritious foods. SK Foods, with facilities in several locations throughout California, was quick to respond to the shortages with available supplies of diced tomatoes.

Bill Foltz, regional food solicitor for Second Harvest Food Bank, is helping to coordinate distribution of the SK Foods tomatoes. "It's a great product and has such versatility to it. This outstanding donation comes at a time when our food banks are scrambling desperately for donations," explained Foltz. Ted Torres, operations manager of Food Link for Tulare County, said, "Food banks across the state are really grateful to SK Foods - they have given great donations in the past and continue to do so."

Food banks in Monterey, Fresno and Tulare counties have already scheduled deliveries of the tomatoes, with additional donations planned in Butte, Yolo and Colusa counties. The Alameda, Watsonville, San Jose, San Francisco, Redwood Empire (in Santa Rosa), and San Joaquin (in Manteca) food banks will also receive up to two truckloads each of the diced tomatoes. SK Foods will provide all transportation and cover freight costs, a tremendous added value to the food banks.

SK Foods, based in Monterey, California, is owned and operated by the Salyer family, which has successfully farmed diversified crops on a large scale in California's Central Valley since the early 1900s. Family members have long been recognized as leaders in agriculture nationwide - a broad experience that makes them unique among processors. The company recently named Stefanie Salyer as corporate recruitment manager, and she represents the fourth generation of the Salyer family to join the family business begun by her great-grandfather, Clarence Salyer. In addition to the Salyer family, many members of SK Food's team of seasoned industry professionals have been with the company for nearly two decades.
