Seventh annual Texas Commodity Symposium program announced

The seventh annual Texas Commodity Symposium will be held Nov. 28, and is hosted by Corn Producers of Texas (CPAT), Texas Grain Sorghum Association (TGSA), Texas Wheat Producers Association (TWPA), Plains Cotton Growers, Inc. (PCG) and the Texas Peanut Producers Board (TPPB).

The symposium will be held in conjunction with the Amarillo Farm and Ranch Show in the Grand Plaza Room at the Amarillo Civic Center. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the Symposium will begin at 9 a.m. The symposium is free to all and will conclude with a catered lunch at noon.

“This year’s program will highlight recent developments in the 2007 Farm Bill and how they affect the state’s commodity producers,” said TWPA Executive Vice President, Rodney Mosier.

Confirmed speakers on the agenda for this year’s symposium include Texas Department of Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples, who will give remarks, and former Congressman and House Agriculture Committee Chairman Larry Combest, who will discuss the activities of the Southwest Council of Agribusiness and its effort to secure a continuation of the successful agriculture policies of the 2002 Farm Bill.

Bryce Anderson, DTN agricultural meteorologist and market analyst has been invited to speak about short- and long-range weather patterns and market forecasts affecting commodity production across the state, which is a new topic for this year’s symposium.

The keynote address will focus on the status of the 2007 Farm Bill. Additional information will be forwarded as soon as it is known.

“The Texas Commodity Symposium provides a unique opportunity for producers to hear from a variety of speakers about issues affecting their operations,” said CPAT Executive Vice-President David Gibson. “Weather plays such a big role in every aspect of agriculture, so we hope to provide producers with an idea of what to expect in the coming months.”

Other confirmed speakers include Don Gohmert, State Conservationist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and John Fuston, State Executive Director for the Texas Farm Service Agency (FSA), who will be giving important program updates. Chris Albracht, Morning Show Host and Program Director for KGNC Radio, will serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the event.

"The Symposium gives producers from several commodities an opportunity to come together, exchange ideas and learn about the issues that impact their operations," said PCG Executive Vice-President Steve Verett.

All producers are encouraged to register early for a chance to win special door prizes. For more information, please contact Rachel Myers, Vice President and Director of Producer and Legislative Affairs for the Texas Wheat Producers at (806) 352-2191 or email (
