Sensor Detects Compaction

A new sensing device to more easily detect compacted soil has been developed by USDA-Agricultural Research Service researchers.

The device measures residual stress — the difference between pressure levels taken before and after equipment has passed. Current methods measure peak stress, which requires complicated electronic equipment. The new sensor doesn't need such hardware. Visit http://msa.ars.usda.gov/al/auburn/nsdl for more information.
