Eight traits

SMARTSTAX corn contains eight genetically modified traits that are combined or stacked: six for insect resistance and two for herbicide tolerance. There are some stacked GM trait crops on the market now, but they only contain up to three traits each. According to codevelopers Dow AgroSciences and Monsanto, SmartStax offers the following benefits:

ABOVEGROUND INSECT CONTROL

It combines Dow's Herculex I technology with Monsanto's second-generation, two-gene lepidopteran control technology called YieldGard VT Pro. This combination provides protection against European corn borer, southwestern corn borer, corn earworm, fall armyworm, western bean cutworm, and black cutworm.

BELOWGROUND INSECT CONTROL

It combines the Dow Herculex RW technology with the Monsanto YieldGard VT Rootworm/RR2 technology. This combination provides protection against western, northern and Mexican corn rootworms.

FLEXIBLE WEED CONTROL

SmartStax brings together the Monsanto Roundup Ready 2 technology and the Bayer CropScience Liberty Link technology. This enables growers to gain broad-spectrum weed and grass control with the option of using either Roundup (glyphosate) or Ignite (glufosinate) herbicide.
