Salinas station will host open house

Growers and their colleagues are invited to attend an Open House on April 10, 2003, at the Agricultural Research Service's laboratories in Salinas, Calif.

Formally known as the U.S. Agricultural Research Station, the facility is located at 1636 East Alisal Street. The event, scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., will include displays and demonstrations of laboratory, greenhouse, and field research.

The Open House will give visitors a chance to learn about the studies conducted at the center by scientists from the Agricultural Research Service, University of California at Davis, and Artichoke Research Association.

These investigations focus on developing new, environmentally friendly ways to boost crop yields, control destructive insects and diseases, zap weeds, and raise crops like strawberries without the need for methyl bromide fumigant. Other studies examine the genetics of crops like lettuce and sugar beets, to determine inheritance of valuable traits such as resistance to disease.

ARS' new organic farming research will also be highlighted at the event.

More information is available by calling the research station at (831) 755-2800.
