Sacramento Valley pear study ready

A new University of California study shows the cost of establishing a green Bartlett pear orchard and the cost to produce pears in the Sacramento Valley.

The study is based upon a hypothetical farm using practices common in the region. Input and reviews were provided by UC Cooperative Extension farm advisors, other UC researchers, growers, farm accountants, pest control advisers, consultants and other agricultural associates.

Assumptions used to identify current costs for operations, material inputs, cash and non-cash overhead are described. A “ranging analysis” table shows profits over a range of prices and yields. Other tables show the monthly cash costs, hourly equipment costs, and the whole farm annual equipment, investment and business overhead costs.

The study — Sample Costs to Establish a Pear Orchard and Produce Pears, Sacramento Valley — can be downloaded from the UC Davis Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics Web site at Written requests can be sent to the Department at One Shields Avenue, Davis, CA 95616 or check with local UCCE offices.

A $3 handling fee is charged for each report mailed from the department. For additional information, call (530) 752-3589.
