UAVs at a German farm show

The DLG (German Agricultural Society) Field Days 2014, held recently at the DLG Crop Protection Center at Bernberg-Strenzfeld, Germany, showcased many new innovations in crop production for German, and European, producers in attendance.

A highlight of this year’s event was a special emphasis by field day organizers to bring in suppliers of drone and unmanned aerial systems. As in the United States, the interest in drone technology and its uses in agriculture has exploded in recent years. Products are getting smaller, lighter, and easier to operate. Producers no longer need several days or weeks to learn to fly these new systems. A few hours of practice (often simulated on the computer) and a producer can be using the aerial systems almost immediately.

All types of systems were on display, as well as the tools and information necessary to use the technology to its fullest potential.

We stopped by some of the suppliers to take a gander at what they had to offer. While not all of these systems have yet to make it to the United States, it is interesting to see how the technology, and use of drones, is evolving for agriculture. Photos: Mark Moore
