The Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation has opened registrations for a cross-curricular program for elementary, middle and high school students, called Gobble Up! The experiential learning contest allows students to creatively develop a marketing strategy for a turkey product of their choice, while learning about the multitude of agricultural careers and skills it takes to develop and sell a product.

Students in grades 3 through 12 are eligible to participate. Students will learn about the turkey production industry and turkey nutrition as a result of participation.

Elementary students who participate in the contest will select a turkey product and then work together in teams of three or more, or as a classroom, to submit a poster that advertises the product and showcases the health benefits associated with eating turkey. Middle school and high school students who participate will work together to submit a marketing plan of their selected turkey-focused product. Their marketing plans include an introduction, product details, marketing tactics, a market analysis and nutrition information. The program is funded in part by the Iowa Turkey Marketing Council.

Register for contest by Oct. 25

“Iowa is an important turkey-producing state,” notes Morgan Minnehan of the Iowa Turkey Federation. “This contest helps students understand about the industry and how turkey can be a nutritious part of a balanced diet.”

Registration is due Oct. 25. Contest submissions are due Nov. 1. Submissions will be judged by a panel of industry experts, turkey producers and educators. Prizes include up to $200, a personalized virtual tour (FarmChat) of a turkey farm, and first-place classrooms will have a turkey brought to their school and supported by the Iowa Turkey Federation.

2020 Iowa Egg Council Partner Award

The Iowa Egg Council has chosen Iowa Department of Ag and Land Stewardship as recipient of the Iowa Egg Council Partner Award for 2020. The award recognizes each year a collaborator that helps deliver on the mission of creating opportunities to increase the value and consumption of eggs and egg products.

In response to IDALS being named the 2020 Iowa Egg Council Partner, Mike Naig, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, said, “Thank you for selecting IDALS for this award. I’m proud of the work our team has done under some very challenging circumstances. We always remember that those we serve are dealing with challenges that threaten their livelihoods, and that’s an important perspective in all of this.”

Kevin Stiles, executive director of the Iowa Egg Council, said, “I’m pleased we are able to recognize our partnership and look forward to celebrating this with our members. Iowa egg producers have benefited greatly from the expertise and support of IDALS. I can think of no group more deserving of the Iowa Egg Council Partner Award than the Iowa Department of Ag and Land Stewardship.”

The Iowa Egg Council and IDALS work together on projects throughout the year. “We support each other as our staffs model collaboration,” Stiles said. “This recognition notes the collaboration in many areas, but especially our 2020 efforts to get COVID-19 relief for egg farmers, including support for CFAP funding, bird disposal cost recovery, the Pack-the-Pantry program, and other support and collaboration.”

This is the fourth year Iowa Egg Council has presented a “partner award” for the Iowa egg industry. Prior winners include Fareway Stores, the Iowa Egg Industry Center and the Food Bank of Iowa. The Iowa Egg Council Partner award will be presented virtually Sept. 24 during the Iowa Poultry Association annual meeting.
