West Texas farmer receives Peanut Efficiency Award in Florida, grows organics

Becker is one of three peanut farmers recognized from peanut producing states

Surrounded by his wife Megan, two sons, Madden and Macall, and his parents, Monty and Cathy Henson, Mason Becker received the 2018 Peanut Efficiency Award for the Southwest region at the 20th annual Southern Peanut Growers Conference held at the San Destin Golf & Beach Resort on Miramar Beach, Florida.

For the 19th year, Farm Press, in cooperation with the Southern Peanut Farmers Federation, named three peanut farmers from three different peanut-producing regions with this award:

  • Southwest Region: Mason Becker, Terry County, Texas
  • Upper Southeast: Atwood McIntosh, Kingstree, South Carolina
  • Lower Southeast: Jimmy Miller, Snead, Alabama

Each grower was presented a plaque and a video highlighting their efficient farming operation and practices. Becker, upon receiving his award, was quick to tell the crowd, his success isn’t only because of him.

“I can stand here and thank people all day long for the honor of standing up here. It doesn’t solely rest on my shoulders, I’ve got a lot of good people around me -- I’ve been really fortunate for that,” says Becker as he thanks the crowd and Farm Press. “There’s a lot of producers that deserve to stand up here more than myself, I’m just fortunate to be listed among them.”

Following the presentations, the three PEA winners participated in a question and answer panel, fielding questions from the breakfast crowd.
