Organic field day set for grape growers

Grape growers and the public are invited to the Sonoma County Grape Growers Association Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Organic Field Day at SRJC Shone Farm, 6225 Eastside Road, Forestville, on Aug. 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

An update on the Code of Sustainable Winegrowing Practices and information on 2006 Pest Management Challenges will be presented.

Jim Campos, Pan American Insurance, will discuss an insurance discount program for Code Participants followed by presentations on Ergonomics and Worker Safety. UCCE Staff will address recent research results including a harvest picking bin study.

Vineyard managers, Tom Gore of Constellation, Tony Viramontes of Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, and Drew Johnson of Fosters Wine Estates will review safety tips such as floor management, harvest safety and stretching exercises before working.

Other topics of interest include: IPM approaches to Vine Mealybug Management by Lucia Varela, UCCE and Dennis Devitt, Gallo of Sonoma, Pesticides and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) by Randy Segawa, California Department of Pesticide Regulation, and Water Needs at Critical Times in Salmonid Life Cycles by California Department of Fish & Game

Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) including 1 hour for Laws & Regulations and 2 hours for General have been applied for. Presenters and regulatory agency representatives will have display tables and be available to answer questions prior to lunch.

Learn about IPM and Organic viticulture in Sonoma County vineyards. Monterey Ag Resources is hosting the BBQ Lunch and Sonoma County wine will be provided. Reservations requested.
