Online powdery mildew course gets good reviews; renewed for 2006

More than 350 California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) licensed Pest Control Advisers (PCA) and Qualified and Private Applicators have completed the online continuing course, Powdery Mildew Control in California Grapevines, on the Western Farm Press Web site (

The course, sponsored online by Dow AgroSciences, has been popular with DPR licensees since it was launched in fall 2004. It has been renewed with DPR for 2 hours for 2006. It also is now accredited by the California Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) program.

The course was developed by the Western Farm Press staff with information provided by world renown University of California, Davis Extension plant pathologist Doug Gubler.

Here are a few of the comments from DPR licensees who have completed the course:

“Well-written information on powdery mildew on grapes,” commented Salinas, Calif., PCA Henry Carrasco.

“Very good learning experience,” was the comment from Williams, Calif., PCA Dustin Duncan.

“I found this course after a bout with powdery mildew. What I learned will be extremely helpful in the future,” said Cambria, Calif., grape grower Susan Higbie.

“Terrific job providing up-to-date information,” said Coarsegold, Calif., independent PCA Mark Steinberg.

“I think these online courses are great. Thank you Farm Press and Dow AgroSciences,” said Aaron Rotondaro of Fresno, Calif.

“Good presentation of material. A time efficient way to get the best information available,” commented Clovis, Calif., PCA James Knabke.

“Great program. Allows efficient use of time while educating PCAs,” said Nipomo, Calif., PCA Kenneth Nichols.

The powdery mildew CEU course is part of a new educational initiative from Western Farm Press and other Prism Business Media agricultural publications.

“Dow AgroSciences was one of the first companies to step up and sponsor an online CEU on the Western Farm Press Web site,” said Greg Frey, Western Farm Press publisher. “Dow AgroSciences obviously recognizes the value of communicating with the professional agricultural consultants and applicators in California and Arizona via online CEUs as well as providing them with an opportunity to earn valuable hours to maintain their licenses.”

According to Frey, this early support was vital to the success of the online educational program at Prism Business Media that has resulted in more than 3,100 courses completed since launching the first course in the spring of 2004. There are now six online courses offered on various Prism Business Media.

All six online CEU courses are also available on the Farm Press University Web site (*
