New tree and vine loss calculators online

A new online calculator that determines the value of individual trees or vines has been released by the UC Davis Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics.

Often, individual trees or vines die of natural causes, or due to shaker damage or a vehicle accident. The Tree and Vine Loss Calculator can determine the value of the loss for insurance purposes or compensation from a utility company or public entity.

Separate Microsoft Excel spreadsheets determine the value of a tree or vine that's lost and replanted, or lost without replanting. Users can enter the values for the lost plant's yield, crop value, and age. Two workbooks compute the total revenue lost for trees and vines that are replanted and those not replanted.

Karen Klonsky, UC Davis Cooperative Extension farm management specialist, led the development of the calculator. Staff researcher Pete Livingston also worked on the project.

“Segments of the agriculture industry really wanted a consistent way to determine fair tree and vine values for parts of orchards and vineyards that weren't going to be replanted,” Klonsky said.

“Frustration over figuring out the value of trees or vines is a common problem. There already was a calculator available for valuing trees and vines removed that were going to be replaced. Now there's one for trees and vines that aren't being replanted,” Klonsky said.
