New from the National Farm Machinery Show

Baler updated

According to Krone, its new Vario Pack 1800 round baler with its optional multi-cut system packs 15% more forage into a bale than conventional balers. The 1800 is designed to produce consistent density and evenly formed bales regardless of crop quality. It features a feed rotor between the 6-ft. 5-in.-wide, five-bar pickup and bale chamber for better material flow. Bale size runs 4 ft. wide and between 3 and 6 ft. tall. Krone also engineered the baler with two continuously rotating chains for the chain and slat conveyor. The new baler lists for $33,410, or $38,495 with the multi-cut option. Contact Krone, Dept. Row-crop sprayer

Demco introduces a new sprayer designed to be more user friendly for the row-crop spraying market. The StarQuest sprayer includes a new hitch designed for shorter turning radiuses and control valves facing the operator for quick visual checks. It has narrow tires to accommodate narrow rows. The axle may be configured from 5 to 10 ft. The company increased the size of the freshwater tank from 1 to 2 gal. while also increasing the rinse-out tank from 55 to 75 gal. The sprayer boom will fold down to a 10-ft. transport width. Available this summer, the sprayer may be ordered with a 500- or 600-gal. tank. Retail price: $15,000. Contact Demco, Dept. FIN, Box 189, Boyden, IA 51234, 800/543-3626,

Precise cultivation

Krause is marketing a new 5630 series field cultivator with a new frame, double-bar tubular design and floating hitch. The company says the cultivator will float over the field yet hold precise depth control on the contours. The cultivator features a tongue cylinder that locks the hitch into a rigid position for transport. Producers may chose from a two-piece K-tine shank or a new spring shank with 190-lb. point load. The implement is available in a three-section model ranging in widths from 27 to 39 ft. or a five-section model that runs up to a width of 50 ft. Rear attachments include three-, four- or five-row tine harrows or three- or five-row spike harrows. A 5630 model that is 32 ft. wide retails for about $21,355. Contact Krause Corp., Dept. Focus on stability

You won't worry about unstable loads with two new telehandlers available from John Deere dealers in August. Deere engineers put the engine in the rear of the new 3200- and 3400-series loaders and the boom pivot in front of the rear axle. The engine acts as a counterweight, keeping the unit steady and stable. The 3200 can reach more than 18 ft. with a lift capacity of 31/10 tons, and the 3400 can reach more than 23 ft. with a lift capacity of 33/10 tons. A 4-cyl., 4-liter John Deere PowerTech engine with 100 hp powers the loaders. Both loaders have 4-wd and will reach 22 mph.

The rear engine also provides a shorter wheelbase. The 3200 has a turning radius of 10 ft. and the 3400's turning radius is about 11 ft. A quiet cab keeps the operator comfortable. Lifting and loading attachments will be available for the telehandlers when they go on the market this summer. The 3200 will list for $65,163 and the 3400 for $69,223.

John Deere also unveiled a redesign of its 5000 Twenty series tractors at the show. The redesign features a new cab that provides more room, less vibration and noise and greater overall comfort. Now the company offers three platforms of the 5220, 5320, 5420 and 5520 models. The platforms include a basic straddle mount, an isolated flat platform and a cab with improved hydraulics. The redesign increased visibility by raising the header bar. Engineers also improved visibility of the loader, drawbar and 3-pt. hitch by mounting the fuel tank on the chassis. The 5220 and 5320 models, equipped with John Deere PowerTech 3-cyl. diesel engines, retail for $20,233 and $22,930, respectively. The 5420 and the 5520, featuring a PowerTech 4-cyl. engine, retail for $25,717 and $28,406, respectively. The deluxe cab is available for an additional $8,700. Contact your local dealer, visit

Smooth spraying

Complete your spraying jobs quickly and smoothly with two new high-speed sprayers from Fast Sprayer. The 7400 series sprayer attaches to a trailer, and the 743P series mounts on a tractor's 3-pt. hitch. The booms of both models are identical and feature a unique center-pivot design that provides a superior ride, according to the manufacturer. Although the boom is not self-leveling, the center pivot has shocks and springs on both sides that keep the boom level. When the sprayer goes on a side hill, the boom will go with the trailer and not self-level the wrong way.

The sprayers feature heavy-duty tubular construction and a range of sizes, standard equipment and options. The 7400 sprayer with a 90-ft. boom, 1,000-gal. tank and 20-in. spacing for single nozzles lists for $25,800. The 743P with a 90-ft. boom and 20-in. spacing for single nozzles lists for $14,200. Ripping power

The first tillage tool bearing the distinctive Caterpillar yellow made its debut at the national show. The TL2 series in-line ripper attracted many growers curious about its heavy-duty features.

The in-line ripper will be available from Cat dealers this fall. The company designed the rugged unit to complement Challenger tractors while improving soil tilth and reducing compaction and residue disturbance.

The in-line ripper is set on a steel tube frame with spring-loaded coulters that cut through residue. The shanks dig 1 ft. deep to cut compaction. A new design on the shank allows it to pivot 6 each way for smoother steering and full power.

The TL2 series will be available in 30-in. spacing and in five-, seven- or nine-shank versions. Other options include working widths from 12 to 22 ft. and either rigid or flat-fold versions. Retail price has not been set, but company officials report it will be competitive with the cost of other in-line rippers.

Cat also will market its TL3 series disk ripper next fall. The ripper provides more aggressive incorporation of soil surface residue to improve soil warm-up and tilth. The unit combines disking and deep ripping to a depth of 1 ft. in one pass. The disc-shank-disc configuration also levels the field, readying it for planting. It will be available with five, seven or nine shanks in rigid or folding configurations. Contact Caterpillar Agricultural Products, Dept. FIN, 12101 Barber-Green Rd., DeKalb, IL 60115, 815/756-5600,

Clean bean cutting

Lower your risk of soybean docking at the elevator with a Keho bean lifter and paddle harvesting system. With the bean lifter system, less foreign material enters the combine, reducing docked prices on the beans and reducing wear and tear on the combine. According to the company, the paddle design does a better job than regular fingers do of pulling the crop into the combine header and keeping the cutterbar free of plant material. The system sells for around $27/ft. Contact Keho Products Ltd., Dept. FIN, Box 449, Nobleford, Alberta, Canada T0L 1S0, 800/661-9419,

Big reach

Two new skid-steer loaders from Caterpillar boast improved reach and height. The 262 and 252 skid-steer loaders provide a lift height of more than 10 ft. and reach more than 2 ft. at a bucket angle of 45. The bucket dump angle is 50, permitting clean-out of high-side trucks. The load capacity of these new versatile loaders is 2,250 lbs. for the 252 model and 2,500 lbs. for the 262 model. A complete line of Cat Work Tools, including multipurpose bucket, bale spear, grapple and stump grinder, will be offered. The new loaders will be available for delivery in June from Cat dealers.
