New Holland tractors updated

Responding to customer comments about last year's models, New Holland has tweaked engines and features to give farmers more of what they want. Here are two familiar models designed to be more productive with a combination of new features.

TJ500 — 50 more horsepower

New Holland is introducing a new 500-hp tractor to its 4-wd TJ tractor line. The tractor's fuel-efficient, 15-l Cummins QSX engine offers power growth up to 50 hp and a torque rise of 39%, allowing it to pull bigger and heavier equipment through tough conditions.

Though based on the same frame and components as those on the TJ450, the TJ500 engine runs 100 rpm faster to achieve an additional 50 hp. It has a larger air induction system, uses larger tires, has improved hydraulics, and uses a 24v starting system with a 12v operating system.

A 16-speed full powershift transmission allows for smooth shifting and fingertip control. The tractor also features a standard 42-gpm hydraulic pump capacity, integral hydraulic wet disc brakes, and a 300-gal. fuel tank.

Like the entire TJ line, the TJ500 can be equipped with New Holland's MegaFlow hydraulic system, which offers up to 90 gpm of hydraulic flow through two independent pump systems. Price of the TJ500 with 710/70R42 tires ranges from $224,937 to $226,477.

TV145 Bidirectional — Improved cooling system

There was some speculation about whether New Holland would bring back its TV145 for another model year. The tractor, with its versatile rotating console inside the cab, seemed like a good idea. But overheating problems kept buyers wary.

Addressing those problems, this year's improved TV145 model features a new, more efficient cooling system. The grill surface on the hood has been increased by 40% to allow for improved cooling. The hydraulic system has been redesigned for improved performance in cold weather operations. A Tier II after-cooled, turbo-charged, 6-cyl., 105-hp diesel provides up to 60% torque rise for attachments.

Also new with the TV145 are a standard engine-end wheel weight package (two wheel weights each weighing 1,500 lbs.) and optional high-intensity discharge cab-end and engine-end roading lights. Price ranges from $86,806 to $99,500.
