Neugebauer names new chief of staff, moves offices

WASHINGTON – Rep. Randy Neugebauer, R-Texas, announced he has named Gayland Barksdale to be his new chief of staff.

Barksdale will work out of Neugebauer's Washington, D.C. office and will be responsible for the overall direction of the congressman's Washington and district offices.

"Gayland's Texas roots and professional experiences have given him the ideal background to lead my staff," Neugebauer said. "He will be a great asset as we move forward in setting legislative goals and providing the constituent services the people of the 19th district deserve."

In 2002, Barksdale received a presidential appointment to serve in the Bush administration as senior advisor for Congressional and intergovernmental affairs at the U.S. General Services Administration. Prior to his stint in the executive branch, Barksdale spent eleven years on the staff of Congressman Dick Armey.

He first joined Armey's staff in 1991 as constituent liaison. He was then promoted to legislative assistant, legislative director, and finally served as chief of staff from 1999 until Armey's retirement in 2002.

Barksdale hails from Justin, Texas and graduated from the University of North Texas with a degree in political science.

Neugebauer also announced he has moved his offices from the Longworth House Office Building to room 429 of the Cannon House Office Building. The Cannon building is located one block east of the Longworth building on Independence Ave.

The fourth floor of the Cannon building may feel to some like a little piece of Texas in the middle of Washington, D.C. Other inhabitants of Cannon's fourth floor include Congresswoman Kay Granger (TX-12) and Congressmen Kevin Brady (TX-8) and John Carter (TX-31).

The phone number for Neugebauer's Washington office remains 202-225-4005 and the fax number, 202-225-9615, also stays the same. Constituents can also continue to contact Neugebauer through his website and by emailing him at

Neugebauer also said that soon he will be announcing the opening of his office in Abilene.
