Elmore honored by agronomy and crop societies
Roger Elmore was recently named a Crop Science Society of America Fellow — the highest recognition bestowed by the CSSA. Elmore is a University of Nebraska-Lincoln agronomy and horticulture professor, Heuermann Chair and interim associate department head, and Nebraska Extension cropping systems specialist and Water for Food Daugherty Global Institute Faculty Fellow. He has spent his career addressing agronomic issues relevant to the needs of crop producers. His most significant research contributions have centered on evaluating corn growth and yield response to extreme weather events. Elmore is co-leading a cover crop research project supported by the Nebraska Soybean Board and the Nebraska Corn Board.
Service to agriculture, Extension recognized
Nebraska Extension in the Panhandle has recognized a Lakeside volunteer and a diversified family farm and ranch operation near Hay Springs for their years of service to agriculture and Extension in the Panhandle. Linda Andersen of Lakeside, who has spent four decades volunteering with the local 4-H program (and 59 years altogether as a member or volunteer), was recognized for Service to Panhandle Extension. Terrell Farms near Hay Springs was recognized for Service to Panhandle Agriculture.
McDermott to retire from fair
The Nebraska State Fair Board recently announced Joseph McDermott, executive director of the Nebraska State Fair, plans to retire. McDermott has been employed by the fair for 30 years, serving for the past nine years as executive director. McDermott will remain in his current position through year-end and continue as a consultant to the board next year.
State Fair Rodeo wins award
The Nebraska State Fair High School Rodeo and Showcase was awarded Rodeo of the Year by the Nebraska High School Rodeo Association at its annual banquet in Kearney in November. The award is voted on by the top 30 high schoolers in each rodeo division that qualify for the state finals.
Nebraska freshman named Angus Ambassador
Sydni Lienemann, from Princeton, will represent more than 25,000 Angus breeders as the 2018 Angus Ambassador. A freshman majoring in animal science and agricultural economics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lienemann competed against four other finalists for the title at the 2017 Angus Convention in Fort Worth, Tex.
Renewable Fuels Nebraska names next director
Renewable Fuels Nebraska, the trade organization for Nebraska’s ethanol industry, announced recently they have selected Troy Bredenkamp to be the organization’s next executive director. Bredenkamp, who most recently served as general manager of the Nebraska Rural Electric Association, began his role with RFN on Nov. 1.
Nebraska FFA members take top honors
Nebraska FFA had many students and chapters competing at events at National FFA Convention. Blake Kirchhoff of the Superior FFA chapter was the champion Forage Production Entrepreneurship/Placement Proficiency Award. Also, 54 American Degrees were awarded to Nebraska FFA members. Jenna Knake and Bailey Boitnott of the Syracuse FFA chapter were champions in the Agriscience Fair.
