Dr. J. Scott Angle has been nominated to be director of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture. President Trump on Aug. 31 nominated Angle, of Alabama, to serve a six-year term as director of the agency.

Angle has served as president and CEO of the International Center for Fertilizer Development since October 2015. Previously, he was the dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of Georgia. He also held faculty and administrative positions at the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Angle is an internationally known soil scientist and Fulbright scholar. As a researcher, he authored or co-authored more than 300 scientific papers, reports, book chapters and abstracts. He is a leading authority on phytoremediation and risks/benefits of recycled waste products to improve soil and boost crop growth.

Angle has received several awards for his work. He was an OECD Fellow at the University of Melbourne in Australia. He received the American Society of Agronomy’s Environmental Research Award in 1998 and the Education Award in 2003. He is a fellow in the American Society of Agronomy and the Soil Science Society of America. At the University of Maryland he was recognized as the inventor of the year for his work on phytoremediation and was a Distinguished Teacher-Scholar – the highest academic award at UMD. 

Angle received his B.S. in Agronomy and M.S. in Soil Science at the University of Maryland.  He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri with an emphasis on Soil Microbiology.
