Mississippi consultants award scholarship to Andy Brown

Mississippi State University agronomy graduate student Andy Brown has been named recipient of the 2013 scholarship awarded by the Mississippi Agricultural Consultants Association. The presentation was made at the group's annual meeting.

The Mississippi Agricultural Consultants Association has awarded its annual scholarship for an outstanding student in agriculture at Mississippi State University to Andy Brown of Starkville, Miss.

“Andy has excelled in his agricultural studies and has an impressive array of extra-curricular work,” said Bill Pellum, Clarksdale consultant who presented the award at the organization’s annual meeting. “We expect great things from him in the future.”

Brown, who earned his B.S. degree in agricultural food and resource economics, is now a second semester graduate student pursuing a degree in agronomy.

“In conjunction with his fall and winter studies, he has done summer internships with the Cochran Fellowship Program,” Pellum said. “He did a 10-week program assisting the Cochran Fellowship in foreign relations, providing agricultural training to foreign participants. He also did a development and implementation project of client resource management outreach. He structured and participated in training programs with international participants in various agricultural topics and served as an intern for Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss.”

Brown also served a six-week internship with the various departments of Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation in 2010, participating in policy development and research initiatives.

“Along with Andy’s involvement in agricultural policy and programs, he has assisted Mississippi State University Extension with test plot management, and Cotton Incorporated with plot trial data collection associated with verification programs,” Pellum said. “He has also been assisting in coordination of the MSU Row Crop Short Course.”

As a graduate student, Brown is currently working under the direction of MSU Extension Soybean Specialist Trent Irby. His thesis project is on the impact of irrigation timing on soybean plant development and yield.

“In his undergraduate work, Andy’s objective was to better understand agricultural policy and ways to represent those in the agriculture industry,” Pellum said. “In his graduate work, he hopes to better understand the issues of row crop production. His career objective is to bring the understanding of both these areas together to better represent production agriculture to those making government policy.”
