Charles Baskin, former Mississippi agronomist, dies

Dr. Charles Baskin, 81, former Mississippi Extension professor of agronomy, who was known globally for his contributions to cottonseed production and quality evaluation, has died at Mobile, Ala. 


Charles Christopher Baskin, 81, Mobile, Alabama, former Extension professor of agronomy at Mississippi State University, died Sept. 12 at Mobile, Ala.

During his career in Mississippi, he was a frequent contributor of articles to Delta Farm Press and was widely known in the agricultural community.

Dr. Baskin’s professional career was highlighted as an expert in seed technology as an agronomist with Mississippi Agricultural Experiment Station, professor of agronomy at MSU, and consulting work in seed technology.

He is known globally for his contribution to cottonseed production and quality evaluation.

His early positions with the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service as assistant county agent in Fayette and Mobile Counties set the stage for his long, productive career, during which he contributed to local, state, national, and international agricultural organizations as an officer in several capacities, and was recognized many times for his contributions to his field.

He was a graduate of Sumter County High School (1950), Alabama Polytechnic Institute (BS 1954), Auburn University (Masters 1963), and Mississippi State University (Ph.D. 1970).

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Billie Boney Baskin; his daughter, Jeannine Baskin Weeks (Greg Weeks); and grandchildren, Emily Jeannine Weeks and Christopher Gregory Weeks.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Alabama Baptist Children's Home, P.O. Box 91924, Mobile AL 36691.

Services are scheduled at Mobile Memorial Garden Monday Sept. 16th at 12 noon, with visitation at 10:30 AM. Condolences may be offered here.
