Meeting targets fire ants

BATON ROUGE, La. — Those engaged in the battle with red imported fire ants will gather March 21-23 for a conference focused on the latest research in managing the pests. The National Red Imported Fire Ant meeting is being hosted by the LSU AgCenter and will be conducted at the Sheraton Baton Rouge Convention Center Hotel in downtown Baton Rouge.

“This meeting rotates annually among the states that have fire ant problems,” said LSU AgCenter entomologist Dale Pollet, who is one of the organizers of this year's event. “We think we have a good program lined up for those who attend.”

Among the topics to be covered during the conference are biological and chemical control of fire ants, the behavior of the pests, biological and ecological factors, eradication efforts and areawide suppression projects. A variety of poster presentations and papers on the latest research also will be presented during the conference.

Registration fees $150. Those fees cover participation in the conference and a variety of meeting material, as well as continental breakfasts and refreshment breaks March 22-23 and lunch on March 22.

For more details on the conference or to register, visit or call 225-578-2180.
