Max Armstrong shares a story from 1981 about a Chicago area beekeeper, Ron Fisher. A famed photographer was looking for a subject to allowed themselves to be covered in bees—this included their head and torso.

Fisher did not have any hair which made the bees stand out and as an avid beekeeper, he could tolerate bee stings. So he covered himself in the bee queen pheromone and they went to work on the photographs.

The photographer was looking for different facial expressions and the one that won out was the “Buddhist” look—it ended up on billboards.

By the way, 3 out of 4 crops we plant depend on pollinators. Over 40 years later and Fisher still keeps bees.

Max Armstrong's Farm Progress America is a daily look at key issues in agriculture. It is produced and presented by Max Armstrong, veteran farm broadcaster and host of This Week in Agribusiness.
