Max Armstrong reports on the controversy over boosting line speeds in pork processing plants

June 1, 2021

Max Armstrong looks at one potential hot topic at World Pork Expo next week – court challenges to a change in the inspection process at pork processing plants. Max reports on the move by USDA to modernize swine slaughter inspection that could increase line speed, and boost efficiency. The rule was the culmination on a science-based review of the process with work that dates back to 1997. A recent Minnesota court ruling limits line speeds to 1,100 animals per hour, which could go into effect July 1. Pork producers are urging USDA to intervene before the ruling takes effect.
