A GARLIC SUMMER: The Sustainable Farming Association of Minnesota is hosting three special garlic-related events this summer: two farm field days and the 14th annual Minnesota Garlic Festival.igoriss/Getty Images

The Sustainable Farming Association of Minnesota's Garlic Growers Networking Group is hosting a field day Sunday, June 30, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Garlicky Bohemian Farm, 12729 County Road 100, Wadena.

The farm is located south of Wadena and specializes in porcelain hardneck garlic. Owners Anita Small and Phil Iverson grow about 6,000 bulbs per year and primarily sell their produce at a farmers’ market.

Their farm is one of the Minnesota Premium Garlic Project field trial sites. The garlic project strives to enhance profitability for existing and new garlic farmers by improving production and marketing practices, by expanding markets and supply chains and by conducting research on improved cultivation methods. The garlic project is made possible by a Specialty Crops Block Grant through the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.

At their field day, Small and Iverson will talk about their trials on spring fertilization, seed dip treatment, planting dates and mulch removal.

There will be a potluck social hour after the tour. Attendees are asked to bring food or drink to share. Also bring along a lawn chair, unless you don’t mind sitting on the ground.

This event is free and open to all. However, an RSVP is required. Register online now.

Additional SFA-Minnesota garlic events coming up this summer include:

• Field day at Round River Farm, 5879 Nikolai Road, Finland, July 6, 1 p.m. Round River Farm is also a Minnesota Premium Garlic Project field trial site. Discussions will focus on spring fertilization, seed dip treatment, planting dates and mulch removal.

• Minnesota Garlic Festival XIV, Aug. 10, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., McLeod County Fairgrounds, Hutchinson. At Garlic Fest, you can buy seed stock for fall planting that’s from local growers and has been tested for bloat nematode; talk with 15 growers from across the region; enjoy quirky entertainment, artisans and wonderful food; and stock up on garlic for your household use.
