Kansas is full of surprises when it comes to rural retreats, offering unforgettable getaways for couples looking to reconnect with nature, unwind and experience the very best of hospitality. From rolling prairies to rugged hills, the incredible rural lodgings in Kansas provide a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Here are four standout options that deserve a spot on your weekend itinerary:
Clover Cliff Ranch, Elmdale
Established in 1860, Clover Cliff Ranch began when J.R. Blackshere left Virginia to pursue agriculture in the Flint Hills of Kansas, staking a homestead and building the original cabin.
Over time, Blackshere introduced innovations such as Kansas’s first successful alfalfa crop and black Galloway cattle, which thrived in the region's harsh winters. The limestone home was expanded by 1883, and in 1912, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Prather modernized the property, adding plumbing, electricity and a stone veranda while hosting community events and notable visitors.
In 1987, James and Joan Donahue purchased the ranch, preserving its historic charm with renovations such as a walnut serpentine staircase and copper roof.
Today, Warren and Susie Harshman, the ranch’s fourth owners, oversee the 150-year-old, 3,928-acre property, maintaining its agricultural legacy. Committed to the spirit of gracious hospitality, they ensure the Clover Cliff Ranch continues to thrive as both a historic treasure and a working ranch.
Couples can spend their days exploring the nearby Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, strolling the ranch’s scenic trails, or simply relaxing on the expansive porch with sweeping views of the Flint Hills.
