REGISTER NOW: The online crop marketing course provides a learning opportunity for those who manage farm operations.

Here’s an opportunity to learn about crop marketing strategies, tools and market planning at your own pace. What was once exclusively a face-to-face meeting or workshop is available Nov. 10 for you to learn when and where you want.

Offered by Iowa State University Extension in cooperation with Iowa Farm Bureau, the Online Crop Marketing Course is a non-credit professional certificate class. “And it’s a unique learning opportunity for row crop farming operation managers or anyone who wants to learn more about marketing corn and soybeans,” says ISU Extension farm management specialist Steve Johnson. The course will use active learning tools to help participants develop a crop price risk management plan.

Market planning

In this course, participants can explore futures price and basis movements, marketing tools, and grain contracts that can help create a successful marketing plan. Users can review video presentations, learning activities and take educational quizzes. A special emphasis is given to comprehensive crop market planning and price risk management.

This course is self-paced, with students completing the content in four weeks on average after registration. “Users can progress through the course as fast or slow as they want, as long as it’s completed by March 15, 2020,” says Johnson says. Cost is $200, and you can register online at ISU.

Management workshop set

On Nov. 15, an ag outlook and farm management meeting for farmers and landowners will be held at the ISU Extension Polk County office at Altoona. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. and presentations run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. In the morning session, these three topics will be presented:

  • “Crop Market Price Outlook, Margins & Risk Management Strategies,” by Chad Hart, ISU Extension grain marketing economist

  • “U.S. and China Trade Update,” by Wendong Zhang, ISU Extension farm management economist

The afternoon session will be a live webinar on 2019 farm income tax planning and considerations.

Registration for the day is $35 per individual or $50 per couple, payable at the door. A catered lunch and all training materials are included. Preregister by Nov. 12 by calling 515-957-5760 or email [email protected].
