The wet weather Minnesota experienced in 2018 continues into 2019.

Since Jan. 1 and through June 18, precipitation averaged 2.6 inches higher than normal across all weather stations reporting to the Midwest Regional Climate Center.

The precipitation norm for the state by June 18 is 11.5 inches. This year, however, Minnesota’s rainfall is already at 14 inches on average.

That’s a 21% increase from the norm.

Two University of Minnesota research and outreach stations recorded the highest rainfalls in this period. Waseca saw nearly 22 inches of rain while Lamberton recorded nearly 21.5 inches.

Redwood Falls, Jordan and the Minneapolis Flying Cloud Airport all recorded just over 20 inches of rain.

On the flip side, parts of northern Minnesota experienced normal or less-than-normal rainfall totals.

Across the U.S., the month of May concluded as the second wettest month on record and it contributed to a record-wet, 12-month period, according to NOAA.

The average precipitation for May was 4.41 inches, 1.5 inches above average and ranked second wettest in the 125-year record. The wettest month on record remains May 2015, with 4.44 inches.

Soggy conditions from June 2018 through May 2019 led to the wettest 12-month period on record in the U.S., with 37.68 inches, 7.73 inch above average.
