The Minnesota Department of Agriculture has awarded $709,235 in meat, poultry, egg and milk processing grants to 15 recipients across Minnesota in the grant program’s first year of operation.
The grant program aims to facilitate the startup, modernization or expansion of meat, poultry, egg and milk processing businesses. The intent of the program is to increase sales of Minnesota-raised livestock products by investing in equipment and physical improvements that support processing, capacity, market diversification and market access.
“The past couple years has clearly shown us the need for Minnesota farmers to have expanded options for processing their livestock and related products,” says Thom Petersen, agriculture commissioner. “This new grant helps butchers increase the resiliency of their processing and provides customers with increased access to fresh meat, poultry, egg and milk products.”
Funding for this program is made available through the MDA’s Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation program, which administers grants to farmers, agribusinesses, schools and more throughout the state of Minnesota. The AGRI program exists to advance Minnesota’s agricultural and renewable energy sectors.
2022 grant recipients
The 2022 recipients and their grant awards are:
French Lake Butcher Shop Inc. South Haven, Wright County; $58,234 to purchase an automatic labeler machine, new splitting saw and to repair or replace the freezer to increase capacity.
Jenniges Meat Processing Inc. Brooten, Stearns County; $100,000 to expand a new facility with purchase of processing equipment, including a rail system and smokehouses.
Concord Fresh Meat Processing Inc. South St. Paul, Dakota County; $29,435 to buy a hydraulic stuffer, shrink tunnel, poly-top tables, vertical meat saw, and hog scalder and dehairer.
Lakes Processing Inc. Detroit Lakes, Becker County; $52,601 to purchase equipment for smoking meat, bacon cutting and meat wrapping.
Long Cheng Inc. South Saint Paul, Dakota County; $68,700 to acquire chicken processing equipment and coolers.
K&S Poultry. Kerkhoven, Swift County; $68,947 to purchase cooler condensers and large-animal processing equipment.
Dennison Meat Locker LLC. Dennison, Goodhue County; $21,000 for physical improvements to the kill room, processing room, outside freezer unit and retail area.
Round Table Meats LLC. Goodview, Winona County; $19,924 to acquire a meat smoker and a refrigerated trailer.
Northern Pride Inc. Thief River Falls, Pennington County; $50,000 to buy overwrap tray equipment.
Midwest Meats LLC. New York Mills, Otter Tail County; $40,000 to add a kill floor and purchase production equipment.
Elm Dale Creamery and Locker. Bowlus, Morrison County; $26,500 to purchase a meat bulker, patty maker, meat grinder, meat saw, basket dollies and a platter dolly.
Schaefer's Market. Sauk Centre, Stearns County; $75,000 to acquire equipment to increase sausage production.
The Country Butcher LLC. Madison, Lac qui Parle County; $23,481 to purchase utensil washer, walk-in cooler, bone saw and freezer.
Kenyon Meats. Kenyon, Goodhue County; $62,912 to convert freezer room into a dedicated sausage and hamburger room; and purchase new equipment for faster, less labor-intensive and safer processing and sterilizing.
Kerkhoven Country Butcher. Kerkhoven, Swift County; $12,500 to buy a walk-in freezer, walk-in cooler and meat saw.
