CFTC data may mask Wall Street bets

Built-in delays obscures shift in markets on Wednesday

A day late and a dollar short may never have been more true than with Friday’s Commitment of Traders reports.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission publishes the tally of what players are doing on Friday afternoon. But the data reflects positions current as of Tuesday. A lot can and did change in just one day last week.

In the energy market, the government Wednesday published its regular inventory report, which showed a big shift in stocks. Just 90 minutes later USDA weighed in with its May supply and demand report, which also caused markets to reshuffle. 

Here’s a look at results from the May 12 Commitment of Traders – and what changed since the CFTC collected its numbers.
