$7,100 per acre tops finals auctions of 2016

Most other cropland put up for auction in November and December in eastern South Dakota brought $4,000 to $6,500 per acre.

END-OF-YEAR SALES: Cropland in eastern South Dakota sold for as much as $7,100 per acre at public auctions in November and December.

The sale of farmland in eastern Brooking County, S.D., for $7,100 per acre topped the survey of land auction results from November and December 2016. Most other cropland in eastern South Dakota brought between $4,000 and $6,500 per acre at auctions held before the beginning of the new year. See details below.

Brookings County cropland brings $7,100/a
About 128 acres of cropland in Brookings County, S.D., sold for $7,100 per acre at an auction in the fall of 2016. It was part of a 288-acre tract that averaged $3,218 per acre. The remainder of the ground was mostly pasture. $6,025 per acre for Miner County land
Approximately 157 acres in Miner County, S.D., that had been donated to a local church brought $6,025 per acre at an auction last fall. $5,600 per acre buys land near Sioux Falls
About 100 acres in Minnehaha County, S.D., 7 miles outside of Sioux Falls, sold for $5,600 per acre. The land included some level productive cropland and excellent hunting and wildlife habitat areas along the Big Sioux River, according to the sale bill. — Auction managed and conducted by Sutton Auctioneer and Land Broker, Sioux Falls, S.D. ‘Cattlemen’s paradise, hunter’s haven’ sells
Two farms in Turner County, S.D., sold for about $4,000 per acre recently. A 136-acre tract with a soil productivity rating of 63.8 sold for $4,250 per acre, and 168 acres that was all in grass with “heavy, deep, wooded draws, and hundreds of cedar and deciduous trees,” according to the sale bill, sold for $4,100 per acre. The land overlooked the Turkey Ridge Valley. “A cattleman’s paradise or hunter’s haven,” the sale bill proclaimed. Clay County land sold

$6,300 per acre buys Moody County land
A 160-acre farm in Moody County, S.D, sold for $6,300 per acre in November. “It had a mixture of productive cropland, along with some areas that may provide a haven for deer, pheasants, wild turkeys and other wildlife,” the sale bill said. The farm had an overall weighted productivity index of 75.4 and had a gently rolling to rolling topography — Auction managed and conducted by Burlage Peterson Realty, Brookings, S.D.
