The numbers are staggering. Deemed a "silent crisis," the United Nations reports that globally over 1 billion people are hungry, an unprecedented high. With less than 1,800 calories per day, one-sixth of the world's population is in need of direct assistance.

The crisis also affects the quality of nutrition, as families buy cheaper foods which are calorie-rich, but contain fewer proteins than meat or dairy products.
