Weed Day at UC Davis July 15

You can read about the latest weed-science research being conducted at UC Davis, but nothing beats seeing it for yourself. That’s why pest control advisors, chemical company cooperators, faculty, students and regulatory officials continue to gather at UC Davis each July for Weed Day, an annual tour of the vast array of weed-control field trials underway.

This year’s 54th Annual Weed Day will be held Thursday, July 15, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. As always, it will begin with a bus tour of various weed-science research plots and a visit to the USDA-ARS Exotic Invasive Weed Research Laboratory. In the afternoon, after a nice lunch, staff and students will present information on projects that are either not in-season or located too far off campus for viewing.

“We have a lot of interesting projects to present,” says Joe DiTomaso, Cooperative Extension specialist and weed expert, and chairman of this year’s event. “We have both vegetable and non-crop field trials to view, as well as the aquatic research and weed identification. We’ll be hearing about new studies which will help us predict and mitigate the invasiveness of biofuels, along with studies on weed culture in riparian areas and the genetics of French Broom.”

And that’s just a sampling of the topics in store. The cost is $55 for registration received before or on July 7, $80 for registration received after July 7, and $15 for students with a valid ID. For more details and to register, see http://wric.ucdavis.edu and click on WEED DAY or call (530) 752-1748.
