INCOME IMPROVEMENT: The USDA Farm Service Agency again is operational after the government shutdown, and farmers can sign up to take part in programs.

With the USDA Farm Service Agency offices reopened, farmers have a short window to sign up for the Market Facilitation Program and Livestock Forage Program.

The deadline for the Market Facilitation Program is Feb. 14. This program includes all operators and landowners who shared in corn, soybeans, grain sorghum, wheat, hogs and dairy during 2018.

Individuals must opt in to participate. Farmers who already had an eligible crop in 2018 need to sign part D of the application before the deadline. They can certify bushels by May 1.

Many livestock producers already have signed up for Livestock Forage Program. In northwest Missouri, more than 600 producers took part in LFP. The program provided compensation for farmers who suffered grazing losses during the 2018 drought. Farmers have a little more time to sign up for LFP as its deadline was extended to Feb. 28.  Those interested in the program will need to have livestock numbers, separated by adults and calves weighing at least 500 pounds by July 2018, and any cash leases on rented land on hand when they visit the local FSA office.

Here are some other deadline extensions of USDA farm programs:

• If loan matured in December 2018, settlement date extended to Feb. 14

Editor, Missouri Ruralist

Mindy resides on a small farm just outside of Holstein, Mo, about 80 miles southwest of St. Louis.

After graduating from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural journalism, she worked briefly at a public relations firm in Kansas City. Her husband’s career led the couple north to Minnesota.

There, she reported on large-scale production of corn, soybeans, sugar beets, and dairy, as well as, biofuels for The Land. After 10 years, the couple returned to Missouri and she began covering agriculture in the Show-Me State.

“In all my 15 years of writing about agriculture, I have found some of the most progressive thinkers are farmers,” she says. “They are constantly searching for ways to do more with less, improve their land and leave their legacy to the next generation.”

Mindy and her husband, Stacy, together with their daughters, Elisa and Cassidy, operate Showtime Farms in southern Warren County. The family spends a great deal of time caring for and showing Dorset, Oxford and crossbred sheep.
