TAX PLANNING: Amid discussion of major tax reform in Congress, farmers tuning in for the Nov. 13 webinar will receive updated information and tips for 2017 farm income tax preparation.

With new changes to the tax code and revised regulations, farmers know that staying up to date on the latest tax changes and preparing farm income taxes can be a real challenge. To aid in the process, the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation will present its annual Iowa farm income tax webinar on Nov. 13 at 1 p.m.

A host of experts will cover the key information farmers need to know as they look toward this year’s tax preparation. The speakers will draw on their expertise to provide the latest information and tax tips to help farmers navigate the challenges of tax preparation. Webinar participants will also have the opportunity ask questions of the presenters.

Presenters include ISU farm tax specialists
Webinar presenters include Kristine Tidgren, staff attorney with the Center for Agricultural Law and Taxation at Iowa State University , and Charles Brown, ISU Extension farm management specialist.

The live webinar will be available online to anyone wishing to tune in; you don’t have to be a member of Iowa Farm Bureau. Following the webinar, a recording of the session will be available online exclusively to Farm Bureau members, along with webinar materials. Farmers can preregister for the webinar and will receive reminder emails at the Iowa Farm Bureau website. Preregistration is not required, so farmers can also join the webinar from their home or farm office the day of the event.

“Today’s farmers face countless challenges, and we know that yearly farm income tax preparation is one of the biggest challenges faced,” says Ed Kordick, IFBF commodity services manager. “Each year there are valuable updates and tips shared, and this year will include 2017 tax strategies, health insurance information, proposed tax law changes and more. We look forward to providing our members a timely and valuable farm income tax update as they prepare for this year’s tax filing.” For more information, contact Kordick at [email protected].

Ag outlook seminar in morning
The afternoon tax webinar will be broadcast live from the Polk County Extension office in Altoona. A morning meeting will be held at that same site for farmers, landowners and anyone else interested in farm financial topics and the price outlook for crops and livestock in 2018. This ISU Extension and Outreach Ag Outlook and Management Seminar on Nov. 13 will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will not be part of the webinar, so you must register ahead and attend the morning meeting in person. The seminar will provide participants with an evaluation of current grain and livestock market conditions, expected trends for income potential, as well as management and farm financial implications. Speakers include ISU Extension economists Lee Schulz, Chad Hart and Wendong Zhang.

Registration fee for the morning seminar is $35 per person or $50 per couple, payable at the door at 8:30 a.m. The first session on the livestock outlook begins at 9 a.m. The fee includes lunch and all training materials. Preregistration is required by Nov. 9 by calling 515-957-5760. Several other locations statewide will host similar ISU Extension Pro-Ag Outlook seminars. More information on these meeting dates, locations, registration fees and how to pre-register is available online.
