This fall the Mississippi Delta Community College/Capps Technology Center is offering a new Agriculture Production Class, a non-credit class for existing farm workers or anyone who would like to work for a farming operation.
Attending the class will give the trainee a better handle about farm operations, reduce on the job training time, and hopefully lessen the chance of a costly accident that could occur with a new employee.
Farming is changing and technology is leading the way.
The program includes the following:
Farm Safety Training and CPR Certification through the Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation.
Each trainee will have knowledge and hands-on experience operating tractors on the farm with an understanding of technology used in farming today.
Each trainee will have experience attaching implements.
Each trainee will have experience pulling wide span rigs around obstacles.
Each trainee will have hands on understanding of basic tractor maintenance, changing fluids, changing filters, and how to inspect equipment before operating.
Each trainee will identify and understand the basic tools used in a farming operation.
Each trainee will have an overview of GPS guidance systems and precision spraying application fundamentals.
Each trainee will understand the proper handling of pesticides, herbicide, other chemicals and waste fluids.
The objective of this program is to provide Mississippi residents with additional knowledge and skills who are looking for a career in farming. The cost of the program is $50 per person for 75-plus hours of training. That averages to $0.67 per hour for hands-on instruction. Twelve or more trainees are needed to form a class.
Please register on or before Nov. 4. Classes will begin in early November. Individuals must be 18 years or older to attend and have a valid driver’s license.

MDCC AG Production Training was developed after meeting with a group of farmers in 2013. The objective was to develop a training program that would assist them in hiring local workers who are better prepared and have a greater knowledge of farm operations the first day on the job.
